The Photobarn Photographic Training FAQ's

We like to keep the class sizes small so we limit the number of delegates on each course to a maximum of 12. We find you need a certain amount to create a group dynamic in order to get some atmosphere during the day. When we are actually shooting we would normally split the group into smaller groups, you often learn just as much by watching someone else!. The Photobarn Pathway course is restricted to 8 delegates in order that we can give the extra mentoring required by this course. All our course descriptions mention maximum class size so you can see how many people will be on each course. All courses run from our Portrait studio will have a maximum of 8 people on.

You will need to bring your camera along. A digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex - a camera with a detachable lens) is essential for our "intermediate" and "aspiring professional" courses, though don’t worry about how good your camera and lenses are. Our photography focuses on using light to its best and interacting with your subject to get the best expression and composition, so if you can master a working ability of these skills, you can capture great photographs with any DSLR. For our beginner courses a good compact digital camera is also ok but you will gain more if you have a Digital SLR, we have a amateur camera available if your camera breaks down on the day. We use a Canon 1000D with a 55-200mm lens. PLEASE BRING LOTS OF MEMORY CARDS, you will undoubtably shoot far more than you think you will. There is no need for tripods as we don't use them due to the style of photography we teach. PLEASE BRING SPARE BATTERIES with you as running out of power is not good in the middle of the Northumberland countryside!

We use a variety of people for our shoots, mostly models who are used to large groups of photographers. Model Release forms are in place for all our shooting days and you are free to use any images on your websites or for promotional purposes.

Yes we have full model release forms signed in advance. You can use the images shot on the day for your website and any display albums or display wall portraits. You cannot resell the images to either Stock Libraries or Publication in any magazines or third party websites without prior permission from The Photobarn. You can use the images on your own facebook page without any problem.

The most important mantra in our business is "Laugh as you Learn" we like having a relaxed atmosphere so come and join the fun. Life's too short not to have a laugh! We try and stick to teaching our key bullet points but we are flexible so if the group wants to move away on a slight tangent we can accomodate that. We will also try and meet any individual requests subject to time restraints. Our trainers often stay back at the end of the course day to give some 1-2-1 tuition.

Lunch isn't included in the course fee but we will keep you well supplied with tea, coffee and hot chocolate. We also have bottled mineral water available all day. You can either bring some lunch with you or have lunch at the on site cafe at Thorpe Farm Click here to go to Thorpe Farm Cafe page. They have special meal deals for Photobarn trainees, lunch usually cost around £5 at the cafe for a sandwich with crisps and a drink. Tea and coffee is served throughout the day and we normally take one coffee break in the morning and one in the afternoon. If we are out and about on an all day shoot we will meet the group and have a sumptuous cold picnic.

We offer a full list of accommodation ranging from 5 star luxury hotels to B&B's. Nearby country cottages are also very popular with our delegates as we often find they bring their families with them to our three day courses and make a mini break of it!
